About Us

About us

We draw diagrams of the sky. A print workshop puts them on canvas.

Garnexia makes twelve screen-printed wall hangings, each taken from the kind of diagram you find in an old almanac: the phases of the moon, a chart of stars, the path of the sun, the types of cloud, the run of the tide. Each design comes in two sizes and hangs from a pair of beech dowels, with no frame and no glass.

Why diagrams

A diagram is a picture that has already been simplified by someone trying to explain something. The moon becomes eight circles, a year of rain becomes a row of bars, the wind becomes a star. That makes them good to print: flat shapes, two to four colours, nothing that depends on fine shading.

None of ours is a working chart. The constellations are invented, the rainfall is no city's real record and the barometer measures nothing. We say so on every product page, because a hanging that looks like data should not pretend to be data.

Who makes them

We do not own a print shop. We draw the designs, choose the canvas, the inks and the dowels, and a textile screen-printing workshop prints, cures and sews them to our specification. We say so because it matters when you decide who to buy from: the designs, the choices and the responsibility for what arrives are ours.

Every colour is a separate screen, pulled by hand and dried before the next. The Care & Materials page explains what that means for how a hanging looks and how to look after it.

What we will not claim

  • That two hangings of the same design are identical. Colours can sit a millimetre or two off each other, and ink edges soften slightly into the weave.
  • That the colours will never fade. Pigment inks are durable, but strong direct sun fades any print in time, and violet and vermilion go first.
  • That linen canvas is smooth. It has slubs and darker flecks, and they show through the ink.
